Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme (PBS) Approved Suppliers

Transfer of PBS approved supplier administrative functions

Page last updated: 26 October 2018

In the 2018-19 Federal Budget, the Government announced a measure for improving access to medicines – sustainability of the pharmacy approvals process. This measure streamlines the PBS pharmacy approvals process and recovers its full cost by:

    1. introducing an application fee from 1 July 2019 for pharmacists seeking approval to supply PBS medicines;
    2. transferring pharmacy approval administrative functions from the Department of Human Services (DHS) to the Department of Health (Health) by 1 January 2019; and
    3. investing in new technology to enable applications to be lodged, and application payments to be processed, online.
More specifically:
    • The administrative functions for new and existing PBS approved suppliers will be transferred from the DHS to Health.
    • The transfer will commence on 11 December 2018 and will be finalised by 2 January 2019.
    • Applicants enquiring or applying under S.90, S.91, S.92 or S.94 will be required to liaise with Health instead of DHS about administrative matters.
    • Pharmacy approval applications and change of detail requests must be lodged via the Health Data Portal using an AUSkey.
    • DHS will continue to oversee PBS claim payments and manage applications for PBS Online Claiming (PKI certificates) and ABN & Tax Invoice Agreements.
    • Pharmacists’ representatives may still act on behalf of applicant pharmacists submitting an application for PBS pharmacy approval.
    • Health will liaise with all organisations where DHS would normally.
    • Enquiries regarding approved suppliers will be handled by Health.
    • Please see the FAQ for further details.
